Estimated Miles Per Gallon
The
Estimated Gas Mileage for the United States is about 53 mpg on the
Highway and 43 mpg in the City. However, as with any mileage number,
the driving habits of the owner can be the most important factor in
determining the mpg rate. This varies slightly from the gas mileage
projected in Europe which is slightly higher at 70 mpg and there are
two basic reasons behind that.
1) The EPA required certain revisions to the original design in order to meet USA emission standards.
2) The miles per gallon were originally estimated using the British Imperial Gallon which is a little larger than the US gallon. Additionally,
the Smart Car learns about its driver as it is used, which actually
causes the gas mileage to improve as you continue to drive it. We have
heard reports of the mileage creeping up to over 60 mpg in some cases.
