Smart Car Conversion
In
the United States, a car cannot enter the country unless it meets the
requirements of the US Department of Transportation (DOT) and the
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
If a manufacturerer has not speciically designed the car to meet those standards, it has to be brought into the country bay a registered and approved importer for that specific car. That importer has to apply for approval by stating exactly what they will do to make the car meet the US Standards.
The potential importer's plan is examined and actually tested on vehicles to ensure their design plan is a valid one. Both the EPA and DOT must agree that the importer's modifications are sufficient or else they will not approve the registration. This process can take many months, and in the case of the Smart Car, it took over 3 years.
There
are over twenty specific changes that had to be made to the Smart Car's
safety components and emissions in order for approval to occur.
All
our cars are modified to meet DOT/NHTSA Certification standards and the
cars have also received EPA Certification & Compliance, through our
Independent Commercial Importer, and therefore meet all EPA
requirements.
