LOUIS REGION): Crystal City Underground (CCU) is seeking design entries for its upcoming ‘Cowering in the Caves’ haunted hot spot, planned as part of the CCU haunted “house” taking place at CCU in October of 2012. Local high school student groups are welcome to submit a creative haunted scene design for the haunted “house”. Twenty entries will be selected for construction. Those with the most votes win. Winning entries will receive $2,500 for their school/club. Scenes will be on display in the ‘Cowering in the Caves’ event throughout the month of October. Entries are due by Saturday, June 9, 2012 at 5 p.m. and attendance at an advance pre-design meeting is required. The ‘Cowering in the Cave’ exhibition is designed to showcase the creativity and talent of local high school students while frightening the public that will visit the caves in October.
The contest is open to area high school students only.
Scenes must be durable and be able to last for future hauntings in years to come.
Scenes become the property of Crystal City Underground.
Scenes must be easy to deconstruct and store for future use.
Scenery spaces are approximately 40’ long by 20’ deep. Ceiling height is over 40’.
Scenes may contain electrical components, sound, smoke and other effects, but should be purchased with the $250.
Please keep all receipts to turn in at the end of the project. These receipts will verify that all $250 was spent. Any unused money must be returned to project organizers.
Items that are borrowed from the school and/or individuals must be picked up by November 3rd or they become the property of Crystal City Underground. Project organizers are not responsible for lost, stolen or broken items. Loan items at your own risk!
Live actors may be used as needed. No need to buy masks/costumes/makeup unless something extremely unique/unusual/expensive is needed. These items will be provided. You may staff your scene yourself throughout the month of October. See project organizers for more details.

Scenes can be built on assigned work Saturdays (dates to be determined) and be built at the caves (on these work days only) or built at the location of your choosing.
The scene with the most votes wins – so invite all of your family and friends. Paying visitors to the ‘Cowering in the Caves’ events are the only participants allowed to vote.
Teams of 5-10 students only. Multiple teams can participate from the same school or club.
No scenes of a sexual nature are allowed. Scenes can be graphic in nature (blood/gore) and will be seen by teenagers and adults only.
Crystal City Underground, its employees and volunteers and their families are not responsible for any accidents in creating, transporting and erecting the scenes.
Lunch will be provided to all participants on the day of setup – September 22.
Two free tickets will be provided to all participating team members.
The winner will be decided on Saturday, November 3, 2012 once votes are tallied.
Scenes do not have to be weather resistant and will be displayed in the caves but humid conditions exist in the caves.
Other than actors, the public will not interact with the scene.
Visitors observing the scene will be moving by it slowly on a “hay wagon” (approximately 1 minute).
Scenes will be displayed on a sandy floor and should be freestanding. Scenes will not be secured to caves walls or ceiling.
Up to twenty designs will be selected.
A pre-design meeting is required. Two pre-design meetings are scheduled, and potential entrants need only attend one: Saturday, April 14 at 2:00 p.m. OR Saturday, April 28 at 2:00 p.m. Both sessions will be held at the Crystal City Underground – 700 Crystal Ave. Crystal City, Missouri 63019. At least one member of the team must attend.
Final design submissions are due Saturday, June 9 by 5 p.m. Entrants may either hand-deliver submissions to the cave (on Sat. June 2 only), dropping them off at 700 Crystal Ave. Crystal City, Missouri 63019, between the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., or mail them directly to (or drop them off at) Charles Zidar 3901 Cleveland Ave., St. Louis, MO 63110. A $10 non-refundable entry fee made payable to Crystal City Underground is required upon submission.
20 finalists will be contacted by Saturday June 16, 2012. All participants will be contacted, selected or not.
Each entry must be accompanied by the entry form, entry fee, an artist rendering (perspective or section) and a plan
view showing scale. Three-dimensional models are encouraged, but not required.
Winning teams will receive on-site signage recognition and a $250 stipend towards materials and construction of their design.
Delivery and installation must take place Saturday September 22 by 5 p.m. Alternatives days and times can be arranged before this date (on work days only).
No assistance will be given for delivery and setup.
Organizers reserve the right to alter the rules or cancel the contest at any time.
